The Legendary Lyman Alaskan - Restored
If you made a list of the top 5 most robust, ahead-of-their-time optics of all time, you couldn’t make the list without the Alaskan making the list. I don’t know if it would be number one, number five, or somewhere in-between, but it would have to be there. In my book, when you consider that it was born in the late 1930s, was a workhorse during a few wars (including one World War), and plenty of people still shoot it on their rifle today for applications from short-range deer hunting to CMP sniper shoots, I think it makes a great argument for being the number one optic of all time. Sure, there are better scopes out there for many applications, but is there any one that has stood as a stalwart for so long? I don’t think so.
What’s more, here at Vintage Gun Scopes we tear scopes apart every day and lots of them. We see what fails, we see what lasts. The Lyman Alaskan is without a doubt the oldest trouble-free scope that we have seen. Sure, there are others like the Kollmorgen line in the 1950s that seem to be as clear and bright today as they were 70 years ago and require very little attention. The Alaskan, however, pre-dates the Kollmorgen’s by nearly 20 years and exhibits many of the same (how did they do that back then?) characteristics. And all this in a 7/8” all-blued steel, nearly indestructible package that is sure to last another 100 years if properly restored.
We’ve been wanting to offer full restoration service for your Lyman Alaskan as well as fully restored Lyman Alaskan scopes in inventory here for quite some time, and now they are here. For 2021, we will be able to fully restore your Lyman Alaskan scope to better-than-new condition, ensuring its functionality well into the future. What’s more, if you don’t currently have an Alaskan, we will stock fully restored models in our restorations inventory for 2021.
Specifications of the Lyman Alaskan include a 2.5 power optic in a 7/8’s inch blued steel tube. Lyman Alaskan adjustment is accomplished with internal scope click adjustments at ½” per click at 100 yards. The turrets are covered with screw-on steel caps.
Although the early Alaskans pre-dated nitrogen processing, they were built so weatherproof that they stand up well as a fog-free vintage scope after a good nitrogen processing.
The Lyman Alaskan is a legend. If you have one that needs to be prepped for the next 100 years or if you wish to add one to your collection before they are gone, here is your link: www.vintagegunscopes.com
